SHARE YOUR TALENTS
If you are interested in sharing a skill or talent with others, give us a call.  We are always looking for new activities and we need instructors for them.  The pay is competitive and it is a great way to meet and help people.  Call us today for more information on how you can be a part of sharing your talent with others.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCH
Join us on Thursday nights for a fun evening of playing pitch.  This program will meet from 7:00 - 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Dale Allenbaugh Conference Room.  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.

MONDAY NIGHT PINOCHLE
All you have to do is show up for a great night of Pinochle.  Bring your own partner or come alone and pair up with someone.  We will meet each Monday from 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Marcy Allenbaugh Conference Room.  Wal-Mart of Hays will provide the pop and Alterra Sterling House will provide the popcorn.  The HRC will provide the cards and other supplies.  You supply the FUN!!!  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.  The program is free of charge although donations will be accepted each night to offset the cost of supplies and the supervisor.

Your satisfaction is important to us.  Due to program costs, including instructors, supplies, and to help maintain our minimum numbers, we ask for your cooperation when requesting a refund or credit.

CLASSES
Our policy is to provide a full refund or credit, your choice, to anyone who gives us two (2) business days notification prior to the start of class.  Anything after the two (2) business days will not receive a refund/credit unless your spot can be filled.

KANSAS HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS
Kansas Hunter Education teaches new hunters to be ethical, safe and knowledgeable. The course consists of subjects covering hunter responsibility, ethics, fair chase, history of firearms, firearms basics, ammunition, basic gun safety, field safety, bow hunting, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife of Kansas, outdoor emergencies, Kansas hunting regulations and boating safety for hunters.  The traditional hunter education course is organized and conducted by volunteer instructors. By law, the course must be a minimum of 10 hours in length. Most courses average 12 hours of instruction over two or more days.  Students MUST turn 11 by the last day of class in order to receive their Hunter Education Card.  All parents are welcome to attend the classes with their child.  Students are REQUIRED to attend every session. The refundable deposit will be given at the end of the session on the last session.

BISCOTTI
By themselves or dunked in your afternoon coffee, these twice-baked, elegant Italian cookies are delicious to eat and fun to make! In this hands-on class we'll make a basic dough that allows for countless variations, plus specialty doughs for Double Chocolate Hazelnut and Spicy Ginger biscotti. You'll sample a variety of biscotti; take home your own freshly baked biscotti, plus mixed dough for another 2 dozen. Bring a cookie sheet.

CROISSANTS
Is there any more luxurious treat than a croissant? Layers upon layers of flakey buttery dough, plain or filled, for breakfast, tea or luncheon, croissants can be mastered by the home baker with some time and patience. In this class we'll work our way through all the steps of croissant making as well as taste-test both sweet and savory variations. Students will leave with a batch of laminated dough and a half-dozen shaped croissants ready for baking at home. Experience with yeast doughs and a rolling pin recommended. Please bring a cookie sheet.

ADULT BALLET LESSONS
Come enjoy a ballet class for adults.  This class is for the beginner as well as those who have taken ballet before.  Class attire is ballet leotard and tights or tight fitting (workout) clothes, and any soft soled dance shoe (ballet, jazz, etc.).

AIKIDO
Aikido is a self-defensive martial art that uses an attacker’s energy against them; it primarily focuses on joint locks, throws, and other defensive maneuvers that are designed to protect both the person being attacked and the attacker.  As such, it is a challenging art to learn and master, but its practice is very rewarding.  If you are interested in learning more about it, watch an adult class at Aikido of Northwest Kansas or give this class through the HRC a try!

KANINE KOLLEGE
Kanine Kollege will provide owners with information on traditional methods of socializing and training the family dog.  Exercises taught during this four week class includes:  heel on leash, sit, come, down and stay.  There is a possibility that all of the exercises will not be covered depending on the progress of the class.  Owners will be shown how to use positive reinforcement techniques to teach and enforce commands.  Owners will be expected to work with their dogs between classes.  The instructor will provide assistance to help teach owners how to train their dogs, not train the dogs for you.  All owners must have vaccination records with them during the class.

MAGIC THE GATHERING TOURNAMENTS
Want to play Magic the Gathering with a large variety of new people OR do you want to learn how to play?  Then sign up through the HRC!  Each Friday night, The Gamers Guild (A Wizards of the Coast Advanced Tournament Store) will present an opportunity to experience different play formats.  Depending on which Fridays you swing by, you may catch Standard Magic, Modern, Two-Headed Giant, Commander, Emperor, Free for All, and more!

It’s never too late to start playing tennis!  This summer program will introduce the new players to the game of tennis. Basic tennis skills, games and fun will fill the weekly lesson which will be offered at our local tennis courts. Each session will be geared to the levels of players. Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for people eager to positively impact a child and improve their community at the same time.  Join us for a night of information and pizza to learn how you and/or your family can volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Call Big Brothers Big Sisters at (785)-625-6672 with questions or for more information.  Being a Big Brother, Big Sister, Couple or Family Match could be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you’ll ever do. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do. FUR-EVER FRIENDS: PUPPY COURSE
This class is for puppy’s ages 10 weeks to 6 months.  Handler must provide a copy of first round of shots. There must be at least one handler per dog. In this class the puppies will learn socialization and a few of the basic obedience commands.  On week 4 of the class, the puppy will have fun with agility obstacles and will also receive a diploma.

FUR-EVER FRIENDS: BASIC OBEDIENCE COURSE
This class is for dog’s that are ages 6 months and up.  Handler must provide a copy of shots that include rabies and bordatella.  There must be at least one handler per dog.  In this class the handler will be trained to train their dog.  They will learn basic obedience which includes sit, down, sit-stay, and down-stay; leave it and how to walk on a leash.  A head collar or pinch collar is preferred for this class.  NO choke chains are allowed.  No flexi-leashes are allowed, prefer a 6-8 foot nylon leash (they will be dragging the leash around).  On week 6 of the class, the dogs will have fun with agility obstacles and will also receive a diploma.  If the handler is unsatisfied with the dog’s progression, they can retake the class for half price.

T-SHIRT SCARVES  NEW
Join us as we make beautiful scarves, sewing and knitting free!  These are very simple scarves - all you need to bring is a soft (a used, worn shirt seems to work better), stretchable t-shirt that does NOT have side seams.  You'll need a pair of sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.  You can bring beads and bangles of your choice to dress it up!  We will look at several different ways to create lovely scarves that you'll be proud to wear and share!

WHAT’S IN YOUR WATER - NEW
This course will be informative as to what is actually in your local water supply. The first day we will meet at HRC to learn about what types of things are in the local water resources.  On our second day, we will meet at Big Creek in Frontier Park by the shelter on the south side. On our field day we’ll take samples from Big Creek and then go back to the FHSU Labs to share the testing procedures. This class will allow people to see how they affect local water supplies!

KANSAS SUNFLOWER BREAD  NEW
Amaze your family and friends with this intricate Kansas Sunflower Bread. Layers of enriched dough are twisted and shaped into sunflower designs, decorated with a variety of seeds, and baked for a beautiful and delicious centerpiece for your dinner table. Students will go home with a sunflower ready to bake at home, and additional dough for a second project. Students should be comfortable working with yeast doughs and a rolling pin. 41st ANNUAL HAYS MERCHANTS GOLF TOURNAMENT
Be part of this great Hays tradition the 41st Annual Hays Merchants Golf Tournament!  Play will be held Saturday, July 18 at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course and Sunday, July 19 at Smoky Hill Country Hill Country Club. The tournament is open to both men and women, with flights for men, women & senior divisions (55 years old & older).  All flights must have a minimum of 10 golfers.   The number of golfers and Saturday’s scores will determine the number of flights. This tournament is open to everyone - NOT just Ellis County residents.  Cart rentals available at each location for an additional fee. (Cart fees will slightly increase this year.)

FOCACCIA
The perfect summer bread! Italian focaccia is a flat bread traditionally flavored with olive oil and salt and topped with herbs, olives and other savory tidbits. It's wonderfully versatile--great as a snack with drinks, as a side to salad, or as the foundation to a great sandwich. In this hand on class, participants will taste a variety of focaccia, take home a topped and ready-to-bake round, plus a bucket of dough for another focaccia. Bring an 8-12 cup lidded container and a 9" square
or round cake pan.

TATTING
Learn shuttle tatting in this class.  You will learn the basics of how to make rings, joining and chains.  You will learn how to make a snowflake and edging.  As part of the fee each participant will receive a shuttle and thread.

LOVE YOUR PET PHOTO CONTEST
Take a picture of your sweet pet and enter it in this photo contest.  All photos should be no larger than 4x6 in size, with your name and phone number written on the BACK of the picture.  All entries must be submitted to the Recreation office by deadline date.  Prizes will be award.  Winners will be judged on the day of the K-9 swim and play at the Hays Aquatic Park.

SOURDOUGH AND LEVAIN BREADS - NEW
In the beginning, all breads were sourdoughs, rising to glorious and delicious heights through wild yeast starters. In this class we'll examine how to create and maintain natural sourdough starters, how to manipulate the use of starters to impact a bread's final flavor, and how to adjust time and temperature for a flexible fermentation schedule. This class will cover all the steps of baking sourdough bread. Students will taste test a variety of levain-based breads, take home a sourdough starter, and a bucket of dough for making several loaves at home. Bring a 2-cup and an 8-12 cup lidded container.
