If you are interested in sharing a skill or talent with others, give us a call.  We are always looking for new activities and we need instructors for them.  The pay is competitive and it is a great way to meet people.  Call us today for more information about how you can be a part of sharing your talent with others.

ONGOING EVENTS - Join us for these great ongoing activities!

MONDAY NIGHT PINOCHLE
All you have to do is show up for a great night of Pinochle.  Bring your own partner or come alone and pair up with someone.  We will meet each Monday from 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Hays Recreation Center in the Marcy Room.  Walmart of Hays will provide the pop and Alterra Sterling House will provide the popcorn.  The HRC will provide the cards and other supplies.  You supply the FUN!!!  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.  The program is free of charge although donations will be accepted for supplies each night.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCH
Join us on Thursday nights for a fun evening of playing pitch.  This program will meet from 7:00 - 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Dale Room.  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.

PRIVATE SMALL GROUP DANCE LESSONS
Looking for a more one-on-one or small group setting to practice your dance moves? We will now be offering small group dance lessons that can be tailored to fit your schedule and needs.  Style selections can by individualized whether you’re looking for cha cha, waltz, swing, or more!

KANSAS HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS
Kansas Hunter Education teaches new hunters to be ethical, safe and knowledgeable. The course consists of subjects covering hunter responsibility, ethics, fair chase, history of firearms, firearms basics, ammunition, basic gun safety, field safety, bow hunting, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife of Kansas, outdoor emergencies, Kansas hunting regulations and boating safety for hunters.  The traditional hunter education course is organized and conducted by volunteer instructors. By law, the course must be a minimum of 10 hours in length. Most courses average 12 hours of instruction over two or more days.  Students MUST turn 11 by the last day of class in order to receive their Hunter Education Card.  All parents are welcome to attend the classes with their child.  Students are REQUIRED to attend every session. The refundable deposit will be given at the end of the session on the last session.

FLORAL DESIGN    NEW
The motto for this floral designing class is keep calm and design on! Let us teach you stem wrapping, design planning and other basic design techniques. In one hour you feel as though you can keep calm and design on! Please bring your own container and artificial flowers or purchase these items at a discounted rate during class. Other supplies and tools will be provided. Small take home tool kit will be available to purchase.

GRANDMOTHERS TEA-BREASTFEEDING INFORMATION FOR GRANDMOTHERS     NEW
Congratulations, your daughter or daughter-in-law is having a baby! She says she wants to breastfeed your new grand baby. You have just been given a wonderful opportunity to support her.  You may have concerns because formula feeding worked so well for you.  Today we know more about the importance of breastfeeding for mothers and babies.  With a little help from you, your daughters and grandchild can have a better breastfeeding experience. Monique Holmes, La Leche League and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Elaine Rupp, Healthy Start Program and Certified Breastfeeding Educator (CBE) will provide a special learning opportunity for grandmothers seeking best practice information regarding breastfeeding and the special support role you will have.  Expectant mothers, aunts, and BFF’s are also welcome.  We will look forward to your attending and answering the questions you may have.

ADULT BALLET LESSONS
Come enjoy a ballet class for adults.  This class is for the beginner as well as those who have taken ballet before.  Class attire is ballet leotard and tights or tight fitting (workout) clothes, and any soft soled dance shoe (ballet, jazz, etc.).

PHOTOGRAPHY LESSONS
The first class will cover composition, lighting, tone, color, and the basic functions common to all cameras. It does not cover the operational differences of each model of camera. Our second class, we will meet at before sunset at another location (exact time and location TBA), and have a practice class to cover posing, using environment and outdoor light. Our third class, we will meet back at HRC (regularly scheduled time) and finish with feedback and discussion.

FUR-EVER FRIENDS: PUPPY COURSE
This class is for puppy’s ages 10 weeks to 6 months.  Handler must provide a copy of first round of shots. There must be at least one handler per dog. In this class the puppies will learn socialization and a few of the basic obedience commands.  On week 4 of the class, the puppy will have fun with agility obstacles and will also receive a diploma.

FUR-EVER FRIENDS: BASIC OBEDIENCE COURSE
This class is for dog’s that are ages 6 months and up.  Handler must provide a copy of shots that include rabies and bordatella.  There must be at least one handler per dog.  In this class the handler will be trained to train their dog.  They will learn basic obedience which includes sit, down, sit-stay, and down-stay; leave it and how to walk on a leash.  A head collar or pinch collar is preferred for this class.  NO choke chains are allowed.  No flexi-leashes are allowed, prefer a 6-8 foot nylon leash (they will be dragging the leash around).  On week 6 of the class, the dogs will have fun with agility obstacles and will also receive a diploma.  If the handler is unsatisfied with the dog’s progression, they can retake the class for half price.

KNITTING
Learn the basic stitches of knitting during this class. You will learn how to make a dishcloth. As a part of the fee each participant will receive a pair of knitting needle and yarn.

ALTERNATIVE GRAIN BREADS _NEW
Make healthier, heartier and tastier breads using whole grains, ancient grains and alternative wheats. In this hands-on class, we'll test out breads made with spelt, einkorn, quinoa, Kamut®, and teff as well as whole wheat and dark rye. Using techniques such as pre-ferments, sourdough starters, soakers, and sprouting, we'll create breads which are more nutritious, easy to digest, and flavorful. Students will go home with a loaf ready to bake, and a batch of dough for making more at home. Students should be very familiar with the bread making process and, if possible, have taken Cathy's sourdough class.
Please bring a cookie sheet, an 8-cup lidded container, and a digital food scale if you own one.

BAGELS
Did you know you can make your own bagels that taste infinitely better than those store-bought frozen hockey pucks! Using a two-stage method, we'll mix, knead and shape bagels that can be boiled, topped and baked the next morning in time for breakfast. In this hands-on class, you'll experience all steps of the bagel making process, taste various bagel types, mix up unique cream-cheese spreads, and leave with a half-dozen ready-to-cook bagels and a spread for your breakfast the next morning. Bring a cookie sheet and a 1-cup lidded container.

INTERNATIONAL FLATBREADS    NEW
Come tour the world of flatbreads from France and Italy to Armenia, Morocco, Iran and India. We’ll sample a wide variety of these versatile breads, examining different types of doughs, leavening and cooking techniques. Students will bake two different flatbreads in class as well as mix a batch of dough to bake at home. Bring a cookie sheet, an 8-12 cup lidded container, and a kitchen scale (if you own one).

TATTING
Learn shuttle tatting in this class.  You will learn the basics of how to make rings, joining and chains.  You will learn how to make a snowflake and edging.  As part of the fee each participant will receive a shuttle and thread.

42nd ANNUAL HAYS MERCHANTS GOLF TOURNAMENT
Be part of this great Hays tradition the 41st Annual Hays Merchants Golf Tournament!  Play will be held Saturday, July 30 at Smoky Hill Country Club and Sunday, July 31 at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. The tournament is open to both men and women, with flights for men, women & senior divisions (55 years old & older).  All flights must have a minimum of 10 golfers.   The number of golfers and Saturday’s scores will determine the number of flights. This tournament is open to everyone - NOT just Ellis County residents.  Cart rentals available at each location for an additional fee. (Cart fees will slightly increase this year.)

BASIC ARTISAN BREAD
A golden brown crust that's crisp yet chewy, a creamy white crumb with a distinctive taste and texture....Come learn this amazingly easy method for artisan-style homemade bread. We'll make boules (rounds), baguettes and pita bread. In this hands-on class you'll leave with a freshly baked loaf and a container of dough for four more. Bring a 10-12-cup lidded container that will fit comfortably in your fridge.

DOG AGILITY
We are interested in offering this fun course for you and your dog.  During this beginner obstacle course your dog will be challenged to go under, over and through obstacles while on a leash. No choke collar will be used in this class please have your dog on a standard collar.

LOVE YOUR PET PHOTO CONTEST
Take a picture of your sweet pet and enter it in this photo contest.  All photos should be no larger than 4x6 in size, with your name and phone number written on the BACK of the picture.  All entries must be submitted to the Recreation office by deadline date.  Prizes will be award.  Winners will be judged on the day of the K-9 swim and play at the Hays Aquatic Park.

PUFF PASTRYS______________NEW
Puff pastry dough—delicate layers of pastry layered with butter—can be used for everything from elegant appetizers to delicious desserts. We’ll be making blitz puff pastry, a faster version of the classic, which far surpasses anything in the grocery store freezer section! Students will bake a puff pastry based appetizer and dessert in class, and mix a batch of the dough for another project at home. Bring two cookie sheets and a kitchen scale (if you own one).
