These are some of the classes we have targeted for our participants that are over 55 years young.  We encourage you to register for the classes in the Adult section or the Family section as well.  Also, we encourage you to let us know about other activities that interest you.  We will do our best to match your interests with an opportunity to participate.The Hays Recreation Commission intends for all of its programs to be accessible to everyone.  If you require a reasonable accommodation for a service or program please notify the HRC office with sufficient notice so that arrangements can be made.  For any of the trips we offer, please note that some of the destinations are not as accessible as others.  Please call Gail at the HRC office if you have questions prior to signing up for a trip.

TRIP REFUND POLICY
Trips that require advance ticket purchase no refunds will be issued – see trip description.  Trips with not requiring advance tickets a full refund will be issued if cancelled by the Deadline date.  After the Deadline there will be a $5.00 processing fee charged, up until two days prior to the trip when no refund will be given. 

 

 

ONGOING ACTIVITES - Join us for these great ongoing activities.

MONDAY NIGHT PINOCHLE
All you have to do is show up for a great night of Pinochle.  Bring your own partner or come alone and pair up with someone.  We will meet each Monday from 7:00 – 9:00pm at the Hays Recreation Center in the Marcy Allenbaugh Conference Room.  Wal-Mart of Hays will provide the pop and Brookdale Hays will provide the popcorn.  The HRC will provide the cards and other supplies.  You supply the FUN!!!  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.  The program is free of charge although donations will be accepted for supplies each night.

TUESDAY MINIATURE GOLF
This event will be held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month starting in May and running through September.  You may attend however many times you would like.  This will be a great way to spend some time with your friends outdoors, before the day heats up.  This event is for anyone 55 years old or older.  You will pay Precision Valley each time you play.

TUESDAY BRIDGE TIME
Are you over 55 and love playing Bridge?  If you are, come on out to the Recreation Center and play.  Get together with your friends and meet some new ones while you play this great card game.  This program will meet every Tuesday from 1:00 – 5:00pm.

TUESDAY/THURSDAY - PICKLE BALL
The fastest growing sport in America is especially popular for Senior as it is played on a smaller court (the size of a badminton court). It is played with a paddle (larger than a ping pong paddle) and a whiffle ball. The balls are furnished, and there are paddles to use. Don’t be left out come and join the fun!

WEDNESDAY WALKERS BREAKFAST
On the third Wednesday of every month, the Hays Recreation Commission will be offering a light/healthy breakfast for everyone interested in using our gyms as a walking track.  This is great chance to get involved in one of our walking programs and meet others who also walk in our gyms.

WEDNESDAY - TAI CHI SENIORS
Tai Chi Senior is a proactive origination in China and has been used for many years to promote health and well being.  It has been seen that Tai Chi can help to improve balance and relaxation.  Tai Chi consists of slow, fluid movements, which are done in a standing position.  This class is geared toward senior adults and beginner Tai Chi participants. This class will also bring to you standing yoga poses that will complete your over all mind and body.

WEDNESDAY YOUNG AT HEART DROP IN BOWLING
This recreational bowling time is open to men & women over the age of 55.  Participants may bowl on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 6:00pm at Centennial Lanes.  The fee for each game is $3.50, which includes shoes.  This will be a great time to get out of the house on those hot summer days and have some fun bowling with your friends.

THURSDAY NIGHT PITCH
Join us on Thursday nights for a fun evening of playing pitch.  This program will meet from 7:00 - 9:00pm at the Recreation Center in the Dale Allenbaugh Conference Room.  This program is open to anyone age 18 & older.

BUNCO    NEW
Join us for an afternoon of fun if you can throw dice, you can learn how to play bunco. We will meet once a month for fun, laughter and a little craziness. Price will include snacks and prizes.  Come once or enjoy every session.

Presented by: Ellsworth Correctional Facility The dinner show Treasures.  Joe and Stella are having troubles financially making ends meet. They need to come up with ideas fast to bring in some extra money to keep their house.  This hilarious adventure of the sale and dealings will have everyone laughing. Meal is included.

What to see some beautiful plants?  Let’s travel to Wichita for an overnight trip to attend Sedgwick County Herb Day, stop off at the Niffy Nut House and some good old kitchen spices. You never know what we might find on the way back home. Meals are not included with your fee.

WE’RE GOING TO THE ZOO!    NEW
Come face to face with the wildest animals from around the world! See eye to eye with endangered chimpanzees and orangutans. Get to know the gorillas of The Downing Gorilla Forest. Spend the day with colorful birds, playful penguins, poison dart frogs and more than 3,000 other individual animals of all sizes, shapes and colors. The cost of lunch is not included in your fee.

DAY OF NATURE    NEW
Spend the morning in Hutchinson at the Dillon Nature Center where you can enjoy the Nature display gallery, take a walk through the many different trails outside or just enjoy sitting on the Ray Wildlife observation deck to view the waterfowl, turtles & fish. Following our tour we will drive in to Hutchinson for a bite to eat at a local restaurant. Our last stop will be at Hedrick’s Exotic Animal Farm.  On our tour of the Farm we will see camels, giraffes, kangaroos, ostriches, zebras and other animals.  We will have opportunities to feed and touch some of these animals.   The Meal is not included in your fee.

BREAKING LEGS
It is time for another dinner theater performance at the Russell Community Theater. The worlds of the Mafia and the theatre clash in an Italian restaurant when a play wright seeks funding for his new play from the family of a former student. In this madcap situation, murder and menace are served up with plenty of pasta and laughter. Meal is included in your fee.

Join us on an exciting trip to...well that is the Mystery!  We will be visiting one of the largest dedicated gluten free flour mills in the world. Yes this is just one stop on our day’s journey. We will have lunch at the Majestic Theater which is now utilized as a restaurant featuring original interior, decorative ceiling, wall lighting, and dampening tapestries. We will have something else up our sleeve so you will just have to wait.  The cost of lunch is not included in your fee.

LITTLE SWEDEN
Let us celebrate the Swedish traditions as we walk through street of Lindsborg.  Enjoy the small shops and local restaurants. We will also have a tour of the Old Mill Museum and Red Barn Studio. One more surprise before we head back home. Lunch is on your own.

It’s back, a two day overnight trip to Nebraska City, Nebraska.  There is so much to see so we are staying over two nights to enjoy the sights. Some of the sights you will be seeing are the Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard, Museum of Firefighting, Lewis & Clark Center, and the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park. All activities are subject to change if something would come up.  $50.00 deposit when booking your trip. Your meal is NOT included in your entry fee.

US Highway 36 Treasure Hunt is a huge highway yard sale.  You asked for it so let’s travel the highway and see what treasure you bring back. More information as the time gets closer to the date.  Stopping for lunch?  No we are going to brown bag it.  I will pack a lunch and we eat along the way. No need to waste any time eating we are shopping!
